You kick up. Your handstand hand placement feels…decent. The first few seconds feel great. You’re balanced, you’re stable, you think this might be the one.
Then somewhere around ten or fifteen seconds it starts falling apart. Your shoulders burn, your line sags, your feet drift, and you come down. Every single time, right around the same mark.
So you assume you need to get stronger. Or that your balance isn’t there yet. You add more conditioning, you drill more kick-ups, and the wall keeps arriving at fifteen seconds.
It usually isn’t strength, and it usually isn’t balance. It’s where your hands are.
Muscles fatigue. Bones don’t. If your hands are wider than they should be, you’re holding your handstand with muscle instead of structure, and muscle is on a countdown clock. That’s the fifteen seconds.

Why it looks like a strength problem
The fatigue is real. Your shoulders genuinely are burning out. That part isn’t in your head.
What’s misleading is the conclusion. Burning shoulders feel like a message that says “get stronger,” so that’s the message most people act on. You go do more shoulder conditioning, more holds, more push work. And you do get stronger, so the number creeps up a little. Twelve seconds becomes sixteen. Sixteen becomes twenty.
But you’re buying seconds one at a time with training volume, when the position itself could give you a much bigger chunk for free.
There’s a simple tell. If your handstand were purely a strength problem, it would degrade gradually from the first second. Instead it feels good, then falls off a cliff. That pattern is what running a muscle at high output looks like. You have a battery, the battery drains, and when it’s gone the position goes with it.
A stacked handstand doesn’t drain a battery the same way, because most of the load is going through bone.
What “stacking your skeleton” actually means
Here’s the idea underneath all of this.
Your skeleton can hold weight indefinitely at no metabolic cost. Standing upright right now, you’re not working to stay up. Your bones are stacked, your joints are close to neutral, and small muscles are making small corrections. You can do that for hours.
A handstand can work the same way. Hands on the floor, wrists under elbows, elbows under shoulders, shoulders under hips, hips under feet. When that line is genuinely vertical, your bones carry the load and your muscles are just steering.
The moment any of those segments sits outside the line, a muscle has to hold it there. Now you’re paying for the position continuously instead of just occupying it. And whatever that muscle can pay, it can only pay for so long.
Hand placement is where this starts, because everything above your hands is stacked on top of them.
Why wide feels better
This is the part that keeps people stuck, because your instincts are actively working against you here.
Going wider genuinely does feel more stable. A wider base is more stable side to side, and if you’re new to being upside down, side to side wobble is terrifying. Your body finds the wider position on its own and files it under “this works.”
It does work, for about ten seconds.
The drift also happens without you noticing, which is what makes it hard to catch. Nobody consciously decides to place their hands wide. It creeps in during kick-ups, when you’re reaching for a base that feels safe. It creeps in from wall work, where a wider stance is more forgiving. It creeps in on tired days and then stays.
If you’ve never filmed your hands specifically, there’s a good chance yours are wider than you think.
What the extra width actually costs you
Two things happen when your hands move outside your shoulders.
Your shoulders can’t fully stack. With hands wide, your arms are angled outward rather than straight up. Your shoulders end up sitting slightly outside and below where they’d be in a true stack, which means they can’t get directly over your hands. That gap has to be held closed by muscle, continuously, for as long as you’re up there.
The load shifts from bone to muscle. Once your shoulders are outside the line, the weight isn’t traveling straight down through your arm structure anymore. Your delts and traps take the difference. They’re strong, so they can cover it, and that’s exactly why the first ten seconds feel fine. Then the bill arrives.
There’s a knock-on effect too. Because your shoulders can’t stack, your body still needs to get your feet over your hands, so it borrows the missing range from your lower back. You arch. That’s the banana showing up as a downstream consequence of something happening at your wrists.
Finding your actual width
Shoulder width. That’s the target, and it’s narrower than most beginners think.
Measure it standing up. Stand normally and look straight down at your feet. Set them directly under your shoulder joints, not under the outside edges of your shoulders. That distance is what you want on the floor.
Film your hands, not your shape. Set your phone on the ground pointing at your hands and kick up. Watch just the hands. Most people are surprised. This is also the fastest way to catch drift over time, because it comes back when you’re tired.
Mark the floor. Chalk, tape, whatever you have. Set the marks before you kick up so you’re not negotiating with yourself mid-attempt. Your hands go where the marks are.
Check placement after your kick-up, not before. Plenty of people set up correctly and then land wide, because the kick-up itself pulls them out. If your marks are clean but your hands aren’t on them, that’s a kick-up issue, and it’s worth knowing that’s what you’re actually fixing.
It will feel worse before it feels better
Fair warning, because this catches everyone.
When you narrow your hands, your handstand will get worse first. You’ll wobble more side to side. You’ll fall more. It will feel less stable, less controlled, and less like progress, and your instinct will tell you the wider version was correct.
That’s not a sign you got it wrong. You removed a crutch, and you haven’t yet built the finger and wrist control that replaces it. Side to side stability in a real handstand comes from your hands doing active work, and that’s a skill you develop by needing it.
Give it two weeks of consistent practice at the narrower width before you judge it. The wobble settles, and what shows up on the other side is a hold that stops collapsing on schedule.
Common questions
How much longer should my holds get? It varies, but the change is usually noticeable rather than subtle, because you’re removing a limiter rather than raising a ceiling. More importantly, the character of the hold changes. Instead of a good stretch followed by a collapse, it becomes something you can settle into.
What if narrow hurts my wrists? Wrist discomfort at a narrower width usually means the load is landing in a bad spot rather than that the width is wrong. Check that your fingers are spread and actively gripping, and that you’re not dumping all your weight into the heels of your hands. If it persists, that’s worth looking at with someone who can see you.
Should my fingers point straight forward? Straight forward is the default worth starting from. Slight variation is normal and fine. Turning your hands out significantly is often the same compensation as going wide, just at a different joint.
Does this apply if I’m still against the wall? Yes, and the wall is a good place to fix it, because you’re not managing balance at the same time. Set your marks, kick up, and hold with your hands where they should be.
I came from yoga. Is this different from my downward dog? Somewhat. Plenty of yoga cueing establishes a wider, more open shoulder position that serves those shapes well. A handstand is a stacking problem rather than a shape, and the width that works for one isn’t automatically the width that works for the other.
Start with your hands
If your handstand keeps dying at the same mark, stop treating it as a strength ceiling. Film your hands, set your marks at shoulder width, and accept two weeks of feeling worse.
Muscles fatigue. Bones don’t. Give your bones something to stack on.
